Jai Ganesh Deva — Lyrics in English with Meaning

'Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva' is the best-loved Hindi aarti of Lord Ganesh, traditionally attributed to the saint-poet Surdas. Every auspicious beginning starts with Ganesh, so this aarti is sung first in many pujas. Below are the lyrics in English letters and Devanagari, with an English meaning for each verse.

Wednesday is Ganesh's day, and during the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi this aarti is sung every morning and evening.

Jai ganesh jai ganesh, jai ganesh deva ।
Mata jaki parvati, pita mahadeva ॥

Victory to you, Lord Ganesh! Your mother is Parvati and your father is Mahadev (Shiva).

Ek dant dayavant, char bhuja dhari ।
Mathe sindur sohe, muse ki savari ॥

You have one tusk and a kind heart, and four arms; vermilion shines on your forehead and you ride a mouse.

Pan charhe phul charhe, aur charhe meva ।
Ladduan ka bhog lage, sant karen seva ॥

Betel leaves, flowers and dry fruits are offered to you, laddoos are offered as bhog, and saints serve you.

Andhan ko ankh det, korhin ko kaya ।
Banjhan ko putra det, nirdhan ko maya ॥

You give sight to the blind, a healthy body to the sick, children to the childless and wealth to the poor.

'sur' shyam sharan ae, saphal kije seva ।
Mata jaki parvati, pita mahadeva ॥

'सूर' श्याम शरण आए, सफल कीजे सेवा। माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥

Says Surdas: I have come to your shelter — make my service fruitful. Your mother is Parvati and your father is Mahadev.

Dinan ki laj rakho, shanbhu sutkari ।
Kamna ko purn karo, jaun balihari ॥

Son of Shiva, protect the honour of the humble and fulfil our wishes; I offer myself to you.

Jai ganesh jai ganesh, jai ganesh deva ।
Mata jaki parvati, pita mahadeva ॥

The aarti ends as it began: victory to you, Lord Ganesh.
