Gayatri Mantra — Lyrics in English with Meaning

The Gayatri Mantra comes from the Rig Veda (3.62.10) and its seer is the sage Vishwamitra. It is a prayer to the Supreme in the form of the radiant sun (Savitr), asking that our intellect be guided in the right direction.

Traditionally it is chanted 108 times (one mala), at sunrise or sunset; 11 or 21 times is also fine when time is short.

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः। तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥

We meditate on the most excellent, radiant, sin-destroying divine light of the Supreme — the source of life, remover of suffering and embodiment of bliss. May it inspire and guide our intellect on the right path.
