Om Jai Jagdish Hare — Lyrics in English with Meaning

'Om Jai Jagdish Hare' is an aarti to Lord Vishnu, the Lord of the universe, written in the 19th century by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri. Across North India nearly every puja, katha or havan ends with it. Below are the lyrics in English letters and Devanagari, with an English meaning for each verse.

Thursday is Lord Vishnu's day, when this aarti is sung with special devotion.

Om jai jagdish hare, swami jai jagdish hare ।
Bhakt janon ke sankat, das janon ke sankat, kshan men dur kare ॥

Victory to you, Lord of the universe, O Hari! You remove the troubles of your devotees and servants in a moment.

Jo dhyave phal pave, duhkh binse man ka, swami duhkh binse man ka ।
Sukh sampatti ghar ave, kasht mite tan ka ॥

Whoever meditates on you receives the reward: sorrow leaves the mind, happiness and wealth come home, and the body's pain disappears.

Mat pita tum mere, sharan gahun main kiski, swami sharan gahun main kiski ।
Tum bin aur na duja, as karun main jiski ॥

You are my mother and father — whose shelter should I seek? There is no one but you in whom I can place my hope.

Tum puran paramatma, tum antaryami, swami tum antaryami ।
Parabrahma parameshvar, tum sab ke swami ॥

You are the complete Supreme Soul who knows every heart; you are the highest Brahman, the Supreme Lord, the master of all.

Tum karuna ke sagar, tum palanakarta, swami tum palanakarta ।
Main murakh phalkami, main sevak tum swami, kripa karo bharta ॥

You are an ocean of compassion and the sustainer of all. I am a foolish servant who wants rewards; you are my master — have mercy on me.

Tum ho ek agochar, sabke pranpati, swami sabke pranpati ।
Kis vidhi milun dayamay, tumko main kumti ॥

You are the One beyond the senses, the lord of every life. How can I, with my poor understanding, reach you, O merciful one?

Din-bandhu duhkh-harta, thakur tum mere, swami rakshak tum mere ।
Apne hath uthao, apne sharan lagao, dwar para tere ॥

Friend of the helpless, remover of sorrow, you are my Lord and my protector. Raise your hand and take me into your shelter — I lie at your door.

Vishay-vikar mitao, pap haro deva, swami pap haro deva ।
Shraddha-bhakti barhao, santan ki seva ॥

Remove my worldly cravings and wrongs, take away my sins, O Lord; increase my faith, devotion and service to the saints.

Tan man dhan sab kuchh hai tera, swami sab kuchh hai tera ।
Tera tujhko arpan, kya lage mera ॥

Body, mind and wealth — all of it is yours. I offer you only what is already yours; what of it is mine?

Om jai jagdish hare, swami jai jagdish hare ।
Bhakt janon ke sankat, das janon ke sankat, kshan men dur kare ॥

The aarti ends as it began: victory to you, Lord of the universe.
