Om Jai Shiv Omkara — Lyrics in English with Meaning

'Om Jai Shiv Omkara' is the most widely sung aarti of Lord Shiva. It praises Shiva as Omkara — the sacred sound Om — in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiv are one. Below are the lyrics in English letters and Devanagari, with an English meaning for each verse.

Mondays, Pradosh vrat, the month of Sawan and Mahashivratri are the most special times to sing it.

Om jai shiv onkara, swami jai shiv onkara ।
Brahma, vishnu, sadashiv, arddhangi dhara ॥

Victory to you, Shiva, embodiment of Om! You are Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiv, and Parvati is your other half.

Ekanan chaturanan panchanan raje ।
Hansasan garurasan vrishavahan saje ॥

You shine as the one-faced, four-faced and five-faced Lord, riding the swan, the eagle Garuda and the bull Nandi.

Do bhuj char chaturbhuj dasbhuj ati sohe ।
Trigun rup nirkhate tribhuvan jan mohe ॥

Your two-armed, four-armed and ten-armed forms are radiant; seeing your form of the three qualities, all three worlds are enchanted.

Akshamala vanmala mundamala dhari ।
Tripurari kansari kar mala dhari ॥

You wear a rudraksha rosary, a garland of forest flowers and a garland of skulls; destroyer of Tripura and of Kansa, you hold a rosary in your hand.

Shvetambar pitambar baghambar ange ।
Sanakadik garunadik bhutadik sange ॥

You wear white, yellow and tiger-skin garments, accompanied by Sanak and the sages, by Garuda and the celestials, and by your band of spirits.

Kar ke madhya kamandalu chakra trishuldhari ।
Sukhkari dukhhari jagapalan kari ॥

In your hands are the water-pot, the discus and the trident; you bring joy, remove sorrow and sustain the world.

Brahma vishnu sadashiv janat aviveka ।
Pranavakshar men shobhit ye tinon eka ॥

Only the unwise see Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiv as separate — in the sacred syllable Om all three are one.

Lakshmi va savitri parvati sanga ।
Parvati arddhangi, shivalhari ganga ॥

With you are Lakshmi, Savitri and Parvati; Parvati is your other half, and the Ganga flows as your wave.

Parvat sohain parvati, shankar kailasa ।
Bhang dhatur ka bhojan, bhasmi men vasa ॥

Parvati lives on the mountain and Shankar on Kailash; bhang and datura are your food and you dwell in sacred ash.

Jata men gang bahat hai, gal mundan mala ।
Shesh nag lipatavat, orhat mrigchhala ॥

The Ganga flows in your matted hair, a garland of skulls hangs at your neck, the serpent Shesh coils around you and you wear a deer skin.

Kashi men viraje vishvanath, nandi brahmachari ।
Nit uth darshan pavat, mahima ati bhari ॥

In Kashi you reign as Vishwanath, with Nandi the celibate; those who rise each day for your darshan know how great your glory is.

Trigunaswami ji ki arti jo koi nar gave ।
Kahat shivanand swami, sukh sanpatti pave ॥

Says Swami Shivanand: whoever sings this aarti of the Lord of the three qualities gains happiness and prosperity.
