Significance of Jitiya Vrat

Where it is celebrated: Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal
Mothers keep the Jitiya (Jivitputrika) vrat for the long life and safety of their children. King Jimutavahan is worshipped in it — he offered himself to Garud to save the son of a Nag mother.
It is a three-day festival: Nahay-Khay on the first day, the nirjala vrat on Ashtami on the second day, and parana on the third.
Jitiya Vrat puja vidhi
- Nahay-Khay on Saptami: after a bath, sattvik food (in many places marua roti and noni saag).
- On Ashtami, do 'othgan' before sunrise and begin the nirjala vrat.
- In the evening, worship an image of Jimutavahan made of kusha grass and listen to the katha.
- The katha of the kite and the she-jackal is also heard.
- On the morning of Navami, do the parana and break the vrat.
