Om Jai Gangadhar — Shiv aarti — lyrics and meaning

Om jai gangadhar jai har, jai girijadhisha ।
Tvan man palay nityan, kripya jagdisha ॥
Om har har har mahadev ॥

O Hara who bears the Ganga, O lord of Girija, victory to you; O Jagdish, kindly protect me always. Har Har Mahadev!

Kailase girishikhre, kalpadrumavipine ।
Gunjti madhukarpunje, kunjvane gahne ॥

On the peak of Mount Kailash, in the forest of wish-fulfilling trees, swarms of bees hum in the dense groves.

Kokilakujit khelat, hansavan lalita ।
Rachyati kalaklap, nrityati mudashita ॥

Cuckoos call, lovely swans play, and (there) the arts are displayed and dance goes on in joy.

Tasminllalitasudeshe, shala manirchita ।
Tanmadhye haranikte, gauri mudashita ॥
Krida rachyati, bhusharanchit nijamisham ।
Indradik sur sevat, namyate shisham ॥

In that beautiful place stands a palace of gems; within it, beside Shiva, a joyful Gauri plays with her bejewelled lord; Indra and the other gods bow their heads in service.

Bibudhbadhu bahu nrityat, hridye mudashita ।
Kinnar gayan kurute, sapt swar sahita ॥
Dhinkat thai thai dhinkat, mridang vadyate ।
Kvan kvan lalita venun, madhuran natyate ॥

The wives of the gods dance with happy hearts, kinnars sing in all seven notes, the mridang beats 'dhinak-thaiya' and a sweet flute plays.

Run run charne rachyati, nupuramujjvalita ।
Chakravarte bhramyati, kurute tan dhik tan ॥

Shining anklets jingle, and (the dancers) whirl round to the rhythm of 'ta dhik ta'.

Tan tan lup chup, tan tan damru vadyate ।
Angushthangulinadan, laskatan kurute ॥

The damru sounds to the beat of 'taan-taan lup-chup', and the lasya dance goes on with taps of thumbs and fingers.

Kapurradyutigauran, panchananasahitam ।
Trinayanashashidharmauli, vishadharakanthayutam ॥

Shiva, fair as camphor, five-faced, three-eyed, wearing the moon on his head and a serpent round his neck.

Sundarajatayaklap, pavakayutabhalam ।
Damarutrishulapinakan, karadhritanrikapalam ॥

With lovely matted locks, fire (the third eye) on his forehead, holding in his hands the damru, trishul, Pinaka bow and skull.

Mundai rachyati mala, pannagamupavitam ।
Vamavibhage girija, rupan atilalitam ॥

Wearing a garland of skulls and a serpent as sacred thread, with the most beautiful Girija at his left side.

Sundarasakalashrire, kritabhasmabharanam ।
Iti vrishabhadhvajrup, tapatrayahranan ॥

Whose whole lovely body is adorned with ash — such a form of bull-bannered Shiva removes the three kinds of suffering.

Shankhaninadan kritva, jhallari nadyate ।
Nirajyate brahma, vedarichan pathte ॥

Blowing the conch and playing cymbals, Brahma performs the aarti and recites the verses of the Vedas.

Atimriducharanasroj, hritkamle dhritva ।
Avalokyati maheshan, ishan abhinatva ॥

Placing the most tender lotus feet in the lotus of the heart and bowing to the Lord, (the devotee) has darshan of Mahesh.

Dhyanan arti samye, hridye ati kritva ।
Ramastrijatanathan, ishan abhinatva ॥

At the time of aarti, meditating deeply in his heart, even Shri Rama bows to Shiva, the matted-haired Lord.

Sangatimevan pratidin, pathanan yah kurute ।
Shivasayujyan gachchhti, bhaktya yah shrrinute ॥

Whoever reads this aarti every day or hears it with bhakti attains sayujya (union) with Shiva.

Om Jai Gangadhar — the paath of the Shiv aarti is complete.
