What makes these songs special

  • They feel like a conversation with Chhathi Maiya and the Sun God: devotees pray simply for their children, husband and home.
  • Bahangi, soop, daura, sugarcane and banana come up again and again, so the whole puja preparation can be heard in the song itself.
  • Because these are folk songs, the words differ a little from village to village and family to family. There is no single ‘correct’ text.
  • We give only the song names and meanings here, not the full lyrics of any artist's recording.

Chhath songs and Sharda Sinha

‘Bihar Kokila’ Sharda Sinha's voice carried Chhath songs to homes across India and abroad. Her songs such as ‘Kelwa Ke Paat Par’ and ‘Ho Dinanath’ are still played at the ghats. She passed away in November 2024. Listen to her recordings on the official channels of her music labels.

Which song to sing when

  • Nahay Khay and Kharna: Chhathi Maiya's songs are sung while cleaning the house and preparing the prasad.
  • Sandhya Arghya: ‘Kaanch Hi Baans Ke Bahangiya’ while carrying the daura to the ghat.
  • At night: Chhathi Maiya's songs during the kosi ritual and while staying awake at the ghat.
  • Usha Arghya: ‘Ug Ho Suraj Dev’ at dawn. After the arghya you can also do the Surya Dev Aarti.
