Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye — Narsi Mehta — full lyrics and English meaning

Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye, je pid parai jane re ।
Par duhkhe upkar kare to ye, man abhiman na ane re ॥

A true Vaishnav (devotee) is one who understands the pain of others; who helps the suffering, yet never lets pride enter the mind.

Sakal lokman sahune vande, ninda na kare keni re ।
Vach kachh man nishchal rakhe, dhan dhan janni teni re ॥

He bows to everyone in the world and speaks ill of none; he keeps his speech, deeds and mind pure and steady — blessed is his mother.

Samadrishti ne trishna tyagi, parastri jene mat re ।
Jihva thaki asatya na bole, pardhan nav jhale hath re ॥

He sees all equally, gives up greed, regards other women as mothers; his tongue does not lie and his hand does not touch others' wealth.

Moh maya vyape nahi jene, drirh vairagya jena manman re ।
Ramnam shun tali re lagi, sakal tirath tena tanman re ॥

One whom attachment and Maya do not grip, who has firm detachment in his mind, whose heart is set on Ram-naam — all the tirthas dwell in his body.

Vanlobhi ne kapatarhit chhe, kam krodh nivarya re ।
Bhane narsaiyo tenun darsan kartan, kul ekoter tarya re ॥

One free of greed and deceit, who has conquered desire and anger — Narsi Mehta says, the darshan of such a person liberates seventy-one generations.
